government guidelines
In recent years the Government has promoted improvement in the quality and character of new development and has issued specific guidance in regard to density and the management of traffic in housing areas. A number of related companion documents have also encouraged significant change in the design and content of new housing proposals. The guidance note on housing, PPG3, continues the Government’s commitment to sustainable development and sets the nature of the development that Planning Authorities should promote as follows:
- planned extensions to existing urban environments
- development that is linked to public transport
- mixed use development
- a greener residential environment
- greater emphasis on quality and designing places for people, and the most efficient use of land.
